The Church in Wales reports the success of a small Sunday School in providing 28 “twinned toilets” to developing communities.
Just eight children from a parish in Merthyr Tydfil raised more than £1,700 to twin their toilets with those in some of the world’s poorest communities. They also twinned a toilet for the Archbishop of Wales and he pledged to bump their final total up to £2,000.
The children from St Tydfil’s Well – the Quar – Church raised the money for Toilet Twinning, part of development charity Tearfund, by holding a cake sale, a sponsored walk around the parish and asking people to “spend a penny” by filling empty toilet rolls with coins.
Archbishop Barry Morgan attended the service celebrating the completion of the fundraising drive, and received a plaque to mount above his own installation to commemorate his donation to the cause.
Archbishop Barry said, “This is a magnificent effort from a small group of children who clearly understand the meaning of Christian love and charity and I shall hang my plaque up with pride. It will remind me every time I see it how the things we take for granted in this country, such as decent sanitation and hygiene, can make the difference between life and death, health and disease, to the world’s poorest people.
“I am delighted to donate money from my Mission and General Fund to take the final total to £2,000.”
