Episcopal priest ready to “open a conversation” on marriage in Nebraska

A story at NPTelegraph.com quotes the Rev. Dr. Jeffrey Nelson, Rector of the Episcopal Church of Our Savior in North Platte, Nebraska, welcoming the anticipated advent of same-sex marriages in the state next Monday, following a ruling yesterday morning by a US District judge.

While some churches are reticent or reluctant to embrace the change,

Nelson said he sees same-sex unions as just a part of God’s creativity and diversity, and he said he believes relationships should be celebrated, not fought. He is the first clergy member in North Platte to sign the Ready to Marry proclamation online, through Heartland Clergy for Inclusion, which encourages clergy to embrace unconditional love for all people.

A “live and let live” attitude, he says, is not the same thing as acceptance, and does not invite discussion.

“I think it is time to step up and speak,” Nelson said, “open a conversation.”

Pending an appeal by its Governor, Nebraska will be able to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples starting Monday, March 9th.
