St Philip’s Episcopal Church in Circleville, Ohio, is celebrating 150 years of parish life; but it cannot find the time capsule that its founders left hidden in 1866.
A local ABC news station reports,
“We are celebrating what our ancestors have left for us. They’ve left us are wonderful foundation the gospel of Jesus Christ,” [St Philip’s Rector, the Rev. David] Getreu said.
That foundation began with the laying of a cornerstone in 1866. They put a time capsule inside of it. Father Getreu says church members removed it in 1967, passing it on for safe keeping.
“It was given to the Pickaway County Historical Society however the historical society has no record of it and they continue searching to look for it,” he said.
He says that the items preserved in the capsule, including a check made out to “generations yet unborn,” are not worth much money, but “it would be great to have those pieces so that we can show them to future generations what our previous generations have left for us.”
