The Café reported last week on the unveiling of a Homeless Jesus statue at Cathedral Park in Buffalo, NY. Over the past week, gifts have begun appearing next to the hooded figure lying on a bench, identifiable only from the crucifixion marks in his feet.
WIVB in Buffalo quoted Interim Dean, the Very Rev. Will Mebane, over the weekend:
[P]eople have left food, books, and even a pair of eyeglasses. “It’s just amazing what’s all been collected,” he said. “It’s the wildest thing. Never imagined it would happen.”
Each day church staff takes a load of it to Friends of Night to give to the homeless, but sometimes it disappears first. …
… “It’s okay with us if someone needs something that’s there,” Mebane said. “I think that’s what the people leaving it there intended that it be used.”
The Washington Post and others have taken up the story as the gifts continue to appear.
