Remembering “Rusty”

The ENS delivers a portrait of the Rt. Rev. Rustin R. “Rusty” Kimsey, retired Bishop of Eastern Oregon, who died at his home last Friday at the age of 79.

Born in Oregon in 1935, Kimsey was ordained to the diaconate and to the priesthood successively in 1960. His career in church leadership took him to the Executive Council of the Episcopal Church, and to the Anglican Consultative Council. As bishop, he chaired the Episcopal Church’s Commission on Ecumenical Relations during the years when the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and the Episcopal Church were brought into full communion with one another through the Common Mission agreement.

Following his retirement as Bishop of Eastern Oregon, Kimsey served as assisting bishop of Navajoland and then of Alaska. He leaves behind a wife, three children, two grandchildren, and a host of loving friends and family.

Find the ENS story, with links to letters from Gretchen Kimsey, Rusty’s wife, here.
