The John Hines story to be told at GC

From the John Hines project:

BISHOP JOHN HINES: Justice is the Corporate Face of Love — a documentary film

You are invited to a preview of a documentary about Bishop John Hines who was installed as Presiding Bishop fifty years ago.

Most of you have never heard John Hines in person. Much of this program is taken from the only video biography of Hines that exists. In an extended interview with Hugh Downs, Hines reflects on his life and ministry. Others also tell of their relationship with him. Many who worked closely with him in the turbulent years of the civil rights movement are current leaders in the Episcopal Church. You will find much of what Hines says to be instructive for our church today.

Friday June 26th at 7:00 pm The Radisson Downtown. Limited to 100 seats

Sunday June 28th at 7:00 pm The Hilton, City Center. Limited to 300 seats

The project website offers this description of the documentary:

In 1981, The Right Reverend John E. Hines sat down for a four hour, seven part interview with news anchor Hugh Downs to tell his early memories and the stories of his remarkable years as Bishop of Texas and Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church. John Hines was a remarkable leader from early in his life, and was always one of the youngest men to be chosen for every impactful role he was asked to assume.

He brought to his responsibilities a youthful idealism coupled with an inherent wisdom. He was a fearless leader. He had an innate understanding of the power available to him in each of his roles in life, and he learned how to use that power to proclaim the theology that was at the heart of his ministry. He understood the church to be at work in the world, and not set apart from it. He was perceived by those around him, even those who disagreed with him, as being courageous and a true prophet in biblical terms.
