Walking to Bethlehem in Winston-Salem

Episcopalians, Moravians, Baptists, Methodists and Presbyterians in Winston-Salem North Carolina have all been taking part this Fall in a cooperative journey that has both physical and spiritual dimensions. Walkers from congregations across the city have been logging miles of walking with the ultimate goal of collectively covering the 6,175 miles between Winston-Salem and Bethlehem in Israel.

The walkers have focused on the culture of each region they are “traversing” during this virtual journey.

The idea has caught the attention of some twenty congregations in the region and most of the congregation’s participants are being coordinated by parish nurses.

“Lilana Hines at St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church has coordinated the walk for 67 congregants.

‘We have a broad spectrum of people from our church,’ she said. ‘We have the knitting-group ladies, several families and four people involved in marathons.’

The church’s leadership decided to buy pedometers for every walker.

‘We’re hoping this will bring some lifestyle changes,’ said Hines, who is also a nurse.”
