The Miami Herald follows the story of The Rev. Alberto Cutié (KOO’-tee-ay) with a report on the bishop who received Cutie´into the Episcopal Church, the Rt. Rev. Leo Frade (frah-day).
It was the made-for-TV ending to a weeks-long saga of fame and faith: Alberto Cutié, the telegenic priest embroiled in a magazine-photo scandal, would leave the Roman Catholic church to become an Episcopalian — and would marry his girlfriend of two years.
But when Cutié’s new bishop, the Rt. Rev. Leo Frade, stood inside Miami’s Trinity Cathedral to announce the news to dozens of international reporters, he created his own waves.

The style is typical of Frade’s nine-year tenure, say those who know him well: casual, off-the-cuff and, to some, a bit too in-your-face.
Born in Cuba, Bishop Frade is a leader in civil rights, gay rights, and church planting, especially Spanish language churches, in the Episcopal Church. He and Bishop Joe Doss were arrested and convicted by the federal government for their leadership in the Mariel boatlift from Cuba. The verdict was overturned in 1983. He was first elected bishop of Honduras before being elected bishop of SE Florida.
