For the sake of the oppressed, move ahead

There is another way to be Church, to stand as some sort of beacon or model that flatly contradicts the oppressiveness of the Nigerian Church to its minorities and those who would copy its stance. There has to be a real, material, alternative: a way forward that gives a different vision. The Church clearly most able to do this is The Episcopal Church, closely followed by the Anglican Church of Canada.

Violence in Sudan: the LRA strikes

This morning Tom Bair got a call frmo Ezo saying that on Friday the Lord’s Resistance Army attacked a village nine miles from Ezo, killing nine people and taking six hostages. This is the latest in a series of attacks that began late last year and have continued sporadically since then.

Minns, Duncan at HOB in Nigeria

Archbishop Peter Akinola reports that Martyn Minns and Robert Duncan are among the bishops at the Church of Nigeria House of Bishops meeting.

Minns and Duncan have the opportunity to speak out against the support Akinola and his church have given to a bill persecuting gays. Unless they do so, they are directly implicated.

Nigeria’s legal system adequate for persecution

Homosexuality is illegal under federal law; homosexual practices are punishable by prison sentences of up to 14 years. In the 12 northern states that have adopted Shari’a law, adults convicted of engaging in homosexual intercourse are subject to execution by stoning, although no such sentences were imposed during the year. A dumb, depressing document from Peter Akinola and his Church

Simon Sarmiento of Thinking Anglicans has the five-page document (signed by Peter Akinola) submitted by the Church of Nigeria in support of legislation that would outlaw same sex marriage, which is already illegal. It is chilling, especially the part where Akinola weighs in on just how long the prison sentences for the witnesses of gay marriages should be.
